Coastlines are not just rock and sand. Some of the most productive and biodiverse habitats on the planet develop in the narrow zone where land meets sea, shaped by temperature, salinity, wave energy, and sediment supply. Coral reefs, mangrove forests, sand dunes, and salt marshes each occupy distinct stretches of coastline and support food webs that reach far beyond the shore.
In this lesson you will learn where these four coastal ecosystems are found globally, what makes each one distinctive, and how human activities and climate change are threatening their survival. You will study one ecosystem in depth, examining both its abiotic and biotic characteristics, and practise the kinds of descriptive and evaluative questions that Edexcel sets on this topic.
