Protecting The Environment

The atmosphere, the oceans and the great forests do not belong to any one country, yet every country's economic decisions affect them. A factory's emissions in one nation change weather patterns thousands of kilometres away; a country that clears its rainforest for farmland changes the carbon balance for the whole planet. This is what makes environmental protection different from most other policy problems: no country can solve it alone, and no country can fully opt out of its consequences either.
In this lesson you will examine the causes and consequences of climate change and how the global community and individual citizens are responding, look at how economic development has put pressure on the Global Commons, and weigh up strategies such as the circular economy that try to protect the environment without simply halting growth.
