Physical Processes Give Rise To Characteristic River Landforms

Rivers are among the most powerful sculptors of the physical landscape. From steep mountain valleys to wide, sweeping floodplains, the landforms you see along a river's course are all shaped by the same set of processes: erosion wears rock away, transportation moves sediment downstream, and deposition drops it wherever the current slows. Understanding how these processes interact is the key to explaining why rivers look and behave the way they do.
In this lesson you will learn the main types of erosion, weathering, mass movement, and transportation that operate in river environments. You will trace how channel characteristics change from source to mouth and examine the distinctive landforms created in the upper, middle, and lower course, from waterfalls and gorges to meanders, oxbow lakes, floodplains, levees, and deltas.
