Adapting Form, Tone And Register
Visão Geral
Three words sit at the centre of the writing objective and candidates use them as though they were synonyms. They are not. Form is what the piece is, tone is how you feel about it, and register is how formally you are speaking. A letter can be a letter, furious, and impeccably polite, all at the same time, and knowing that is what lets you write one.
This note is not about the article, the speech or the leaflet. It is about the dial that runs underneath all of them: what actually changes when the same content is written for a different reader, which five controls move the level of formality, and how to set them deliberately in the two minutes after you have read the brief.
