The social activities, fitness and health theme encompasses some of the most practical language in the Edexcel IGCSE (4SW1) Swahili specification. Festivals and celebrations, sports and leisure, market transactions, health and nutrition: these are the domains in which Swahili operates as a living language of daily exchange.

These edexcel igcse swahili social activities, fitness and health revision notes address the five topics within this theme: special occasions, hobbies, interests, sports and exercise, shopping and money matters, accidents, injuries, common ailments and health issues, and food and drink. For each topic, the treatment below provides essential vocabulary, grammatical constructions appropriate to the exam, worked examples, errors to avoid, and self-assessment questions. The objective is to ensure that candidates can deploy the relevant language with both accuracy and confidence. These edexcel igcse swahili revision notes focus on the practical vocabulary and grammatical structures that the mark scheme rewards most heavily across reading, writing, translation and listening tasks. Whether you are preparing for a shopping dialogue, describing a festival, or discussing healthy eating, the material here maps directly to what the examiner is looking for.

Special occasions

This topic requires candidates to discuss celebrations, festivals and special events, describe customs associated with them, and express opinions about social gatherings. The exam may present a reading passage about a festival in East Africa, a listening extract describing wedding preparations, or a writing task inviting you to describe a celebration you have attended.

Key vocabulary

SwahiliEnglishExample
sherehecelebrationSherehe ya harusi ilidumu siku mbili.
sikukuufestival/public holidaySikukuu ya Eid ni muhimu sana.
zawadigift/presentNilimpa mama yangu zawadi nzuri.
wageniguestsWageni wengi walikuja shereheni.
kucheza ngomato dance/play drumsVijana walicheza ngoma usiku kucha.
kupikato cookMama alipika vyakula vingi kwa wageni.
kuzaliwabirthday/to be bornSiku ya kuzaliwa kwangu ni Desemba.

Worked example

Question: Andika kuhusu sherehe uliyohudhuria hivi karibuni. (Write about a celebration you attended recently.)

This response exhibits several features that satisfy the requirements of the mark scheme: chronological sequence markers (kwanza, kisha, baadaye), specific detail (pilau na biriani, wageni zaidi ya mia moja), and a personal reaction (nilifurahi sana). The consistent use of the past tense (-li-) is appropriate to the narrative mode the question demands.

Hobbies, interests, sports and exercise

This topic tests the candidate's ability to describe leisure activities, sports and exercise routines, and to express preferences about free-time pursuits. The vocabulary here is extensive, and the exam may draw on any sport or hobby that students might reasonably discuss.

Key vocabulary

SwahiliEnglishExample
mpira wa miguufootballNinapenda kucheza mpira wa miguu.
kuogeleato swimTunaogelea kila Jumamosi.
kukimbiato runNinakimbia asubuhi kwa mazoezi.
kusoma vitabuto read booksHobby yangu ni kusoma vitabu.
muzikimusicNinapenda kusikiliza muziki wa bongo.
mazoeziexerciseMazoezi ni muhimu kwa afya.
mashindanocompetitionNilishiriki mashindano ya riadha.
Error to avoid: using the infinitive where a conjugated verb is required. Students frequently write sentences such as "Mimi kupenda kucheza mpira" instead of the correct "Ninapenda kucheza mpira." The infinitive kupenda cannot stand alone as a main verb in a declarative sentence. In Swahili, the subject prefix, tense marker and verb stem must be fused: Ni-na-penda. This is a fundamental error that costs marks in every section of the exam.

Shopping and money matters

This topic assesses the candidate's competence in transactional language: describing shopping experiences, discussing prices, budgeting and money management, and conducting transactions in shops and markets. The East African market (soko) is a common exam context, as is the modern shop (duka).

Key vocabulary

SwahiliEnglishExample
dukashopNilinunua viatu dukani.
sokomarketSokoni kuna matunda mengi.
beipriceBei ya nyanya ni shilingi elfu moja.
kununuato buyNinataka kununua gauni jipya.
kuuzato sellMkulima anauza mboga sokoni.
kupunguzato reduce/discountTafadhali punguza bei kidogo.
pesa taslimucashSinalipa kwa pesa taslimu.

Bargaining dialogue: a pattern to master

Market bargaining (kujadiliana bei) is a standard exam scenario. Master this transactional pattern:

  • Buyer: Hii ni bei gani? (How much is this?)
  • Seller: Shilingi elfu tano. (Five thousand shillings.)
  • Buyer: Ni ghali sana! Punguza kidogo. (That is too expensive! Reduce it a little.)
  • Seller: Siwezi kupunguza zaidi. Ni bei ya mwisho. (I cannot reduce further. It is the final price.)
  • Buyer: Sawa, nitanunua mbili kwa shilingi elfu nane. (Fine, I will buy two for eight thousand shillings.)

Accidents, injuries, common ailments and health issues

This topic requires candidates to describe health problems, accidents, injuries and symptoms, and to discuss healthy and unhealthy lifestyles. The vocabulary here is precise, and the exam rewards candidates who can name body parts, describe symptoms accurately, and discuss health advice.

Key vocabulary

SwahiliEnglishExample
daktaridoctorNinapaswa kwenda kwa daktari.
hospitalihospitalAlipelekwa hospitali haraka.
maumivupainNina maumivu ya kichwa.
homafeverMtoto ana homa kali.
jerahawound/injuryAlipata jeraha mgongoni.
dawamedicineDaktari alinipa dawa ya kumeza.
afyahealthAfya njema ni muhimu kuliko pesa.
Error to avoid: confusing body-part possession. In Swahili, body parts take possessive prefixes that agree with their noun class, not with the person who has the ailment. "Nina maumivu ya kichwa" (I have a headache) is correct because kichwa belongs to the Ki/Vi class. Students who write "maumivu ya kichwa yangu" are adding unnecessary and often grammatically incorrect possessive agreement. In medical contexts, the standard Swahili pattern is simpler than students expect: state the symptom and the location without doubling the possessive. Similarly, when giving health advice, use the subjunctive or imperative directly: Kunywa maji mengi (Drink plenty of water), Pumzika vizuri (Rest well), Nenda kwa daktari (Go to the doctor). These directive forms appear in both writing and listening tasks. Being able to give clear, grammatically correct health advice in Swahili is a skill the exam tests directly, and it draws on the imperative and subjunctive verb forms covered in the grammar section of the specification.

Food and drink

This topic covers food and drink preferences, meals and eating habits, cuisine, and discussions about nutrition and healthy eating. East African cuisine provides rich material for the exam: staples like ugali, pilau, chapati and wali are standard vocabulary.

Key vocabulary

  • chakula - food
  • kinywaji - drink/beverage
  • ugali - maize-flour staple
  • pilau - spiced rice
  • nyama - meat
  • samaki - fish
  • mboga - vegetables
  • matunda - fruit
  • chai - tea
  • maji - water

Practice questions for self-assessment

Attempt the following social activities, fitness and health edexcel igcse questions. For each, write a minimum of five complete sentences:

  1. Eleza sherehe moja ya kitamaduni unayoipenda. (Describe one cultural celebration you enjoy.)
  2. Unapenda mchezo gani? Eleza kwa nini unaupenda na jinsi unavyoucheza. (Which sport do you like? Explain why you like it and how you play it.)
  3. Andika mazungumzo sokoni kati ya mnunuzi na muuzaji. (Write a market dialogue between a buyer and a seller.)
  4. Mwanafunzi mwenzako anaumwa. Mpe ushauri kuhusu nini afanye. (Your classmate is unwell. Advise them on what to do.)
  5. Eleza chakula unachokipenda na jinsi kinavyopikwa. (Describe your favourite food and how it is prepared.)

For each of these edexcel igcse swahili practice questions, verify that your response includes topic-specific vocabulary, correct verb forms across at least two tenses, and at least one opinion or recommendation. These elements constitute the minimum standard for a competent response in the igcse 4sw1 social activities, fitness and health section of the exam.

Grammar structures for this theme

The following grammatical constructions are particularly relevant to this theme and should feature prominently in your edexcel igcse swahili notes:

  • Habitual tense (hu): Huogelea kila Jumamosi (I swim every Saturday). Ideal for describing regular activities and exercise routines.
  • Past tense (li): Tulicheza ngoma shereheni (We danced at the celebration). Necessary for narrating events.
  • Imperative: Punguza bei (Reduce the price), Kunywa dawa yako (Take your medicine). Transactional and health contexts demand direct commands.
  • Subjunctive: Ni vizuri ule mboga zaidi (It is good that you eat more vegetables). Health advice naturally uses this form.
  • Numbers and quantities: shilingi elfu tano (five thousand shillings), kilo mbili (two kilos). Shopping scenarios depend on accurate number usage with correct agreement.

This theme is where edexcel igcse swahili explained in practical terms truly serves the candidate. Each topic within it corresponds to a real-world scenario that the specification expects you to handle in Swahili: attending a celebration, playing a sport, bargaining at a market, visiting a doctor, ordering a meal. The vocabulary is concrete, the grammar structures are well defined, and the question types are predictable. Systematic revision of these topics, supported by timed practice on the Green Bridge CBT platform, constitutes the most efficient path to a strong performance in the exam.
