The interconversions are: melting (solid to liquid), boiling/evaporation (liquid to gas), condensation (gas to liquid), freezing (liquid to solid), sublimation (solid directly to gas). Elements, compounds and mixtures
An element contains only one type of atom. A compound contains two or more elements chemically bonded together. A mixture contains two or more substances not chemically bonded. A pure substance has a fixed melting and boiling point; a mixture melts or boils over a range.

Atomic number = number of protons. Mass number = protons + neutrons. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons. Relative atomic mass (Ar) is the weighted average of the masses of all isotopes of an element, taking account of their abundances.
The Periodic Table
Elements are arranged in order of atomic number, in groups (vertical columns) and periods (horizontal rows). - Understand that the mole (mol) is the unit for amount of substance.

- Calculate percentage yield: (actual yield / theoretical yield) x 100.
- Calculate empirical and molecular formulae from experimental data.
Ionic bonding
Ionic bonds form when electrons are transferred from a metal atom to a non-metal atom. The metal atom loses electrons to form a positive ion (cation). The non-metal atom gains electrons to form a negative ion (anion). The electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions is the ionic bond.
You must be able to draw dot-and-cross diagrams showing electron transfer. Common ions include Na+, Mg2+, Cl-, O2-.
Properties of ionic compounds: they form giant ionic lattices with high melting and boiling points (strong electrostatic forces require a lot of energy to overcome). They do not conduct electricity when solid (ions are held in fixed positions) but do conduct when molten or dissolved in water (ions are free to move and carry charge).
Covalent bonding
Covalent bonds form when atoms share pairs of electrons. Both atoms in the bond experience electrostatic attraction to the shared electrons. The specification requires dot-and-cross diagrams for molecules such as H2, Cl2, H2O, CH4, CO2 and NH3.
Simple molecular structures (e.g. water, methane) have weak intermolecular forces between molecules, so they have low melting and boiling points. Substances with higher relative molecular mass have stronger intermolecular forces and therefore higher melting and boiling points. They generally do not conduct electricity.
Giant covalent structures (diamond, graphite, C60 fullerene) have very high melting and boiling points because covalent bonds throughout the structure must be broken.
- Diamond: each carbon atom bonds to four others in a rigid tetrahedral structure. Very hard, does not conduct electricity.
- Graphite: each carbon atom bonds to three others in layers. Layers slide over each other (soft, used as a lubricant). Delocalised electrons between layers allow electrical conduction.
- C60 fullerene: spherical molecules of 60 carbon atoms arranged in pentagons and hexagons.
