Every living thing on Earth, from a bacterium lurking in pond water to a blue whale cruising the deep ocean, shares a set of defining characteristics. Understanding these characteristics and how organisms are classified is the foundation of the entire Edexcel IGCSE Biology specification.

Section 1 of the Pearson Edexcel IGCSE Biology course (4BI1) may be the shortest section in the syllabus, but do not underestimate it. The concepts covered here, the characteristics of living organisms and the variety of living organisms, underpin every other topic you will study. Get these wrong and later sections on nutrition, respiration and reproduction will never quite click. Get them right, and you have a solid platform for everything that follows.

Exam tip: A common memory aid is MRS NERG (Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Nutrition, Excretion, Reproduction, Growth). Some students add an H for Homeostasis to make MRS NERG H. The important thing is that you can list all eight without hesitating, because a question that asks you to "state the characteristics of living organisms" expects all of them.

One subtle but important point: excretion is not the same as egestion. Excretion is the removal of metabolic waste (substances produced by chemical reactions inside cells). Egestion is the removal of undigested food from the body via the anus. Undigested food was never part of cell metabolism, so faeces are not excretory products. This distinction trips up students regularly in the exam.

Applying the characteristics to unfamiliar organisms

The igcse exam will not always ask you to simply list the eight characteristics. A more demanding question might describe an unfamiliar organism and ask you to explain which characteristic is being demonstrated. For instance:

Worked example: A Venus flytrap closes its leaves when an insect touches trigger hairs on its surface. Which characteristic of living organisms does this demonstrate?

Answer: This demonstrates sensitivity (response to a stimulus). The trigger hairs are receptors that detect the insect's touch, and the closing of the leaves is the response. It also demonstrates nutrition, because the plant digests the insect to obtain nutrients, and movement, because the leaves physically change position.

Notice how a single scenario can involve multiple characteristics. Strong answers identify more than one where appropriate, and the exam mark scheme often rewards this.

Variety of living organisms: the five groups

The second topic in this section requires you to describe the common features of the major groups of living organisms. The Edexcel IGCSE Biology specification divides organisms into two broad categories: eukaryotes and prokaryotes. Within the eukaryotes, you need to know four groups: plants, animals, fungi and protoctists. Prokaryotes are represented by bacteria. Viruses sit outside both categories because they are not considered living organisms by most biologists.

Eukaryotic organisms

Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus enclosed by a nuclear membrane, along with other membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria and (in plants) chloroplasts. The four eukaryotic groups are:

Prokaryotic organisms: bacteria

Prokaryotic cells are fundamentally different from eukaryotic cells. They lack a true nucleus: their DNA is a single circular chromosome that floats freely in the cytoplasm. They also lack membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria. Some bacteria have a flagellum for movement and plasmids (small extra circles of DNA) that can carry genes for antibiotic resistance.

Bacteria have a cell wall, but it is not made of cellulose (as in plants) or chitin (as in fungi). Bacterial cell walls have a distinct composition. Some bacteria are useful (e.g. Lactobacillus in yoghurt production), while others are pathogenic and cause disease (e.g. Salmonella).

Viruses: a special case

Viruses are not cells. They are much smaller than bacteria and consist of a protein coat surrounding a core of genetic material (DNA or RNA). They do not carry out any of the eight life processes on their own. They can only reproduce by invading a living host cell and hijacking its machinery to make copies of themselves. This is why most biologists do not classify viruses as living organisms, although they are studied in biology because of their enormous impact on living systems.

Examples of viruses include the influenza virus, HIV, and the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), which damages tobacco plant leaves.

Pathogens: where classification meets disease

The specification requires you to understand the term pathogen and know that pathogens can include organisms from several different groups. A pathogen is a microorganism that causes disease. The key point is that pathogens are not limited to one group of organisms. They can be:

  • Bacteria (e.g. Salmonella causing food poisoning)
  • Viruses (e.g. influenza virus causing flu)
  • Fungi (e.g. Trichophyton causing athlete's foot)
  • Protoctists (e.g. Plasmodium causing malaria)

When a question asks you to "give an example of a pathogen," always state the name of the organism and the disease it causes. Simply writing "bacteria" without naming a specific one is too vague to earn the mark.

Common mistakes in this topic

Students preparing their edexcel igcse biology notes for this section tend to fall into a few predictable traps:

  1. Confusing excretion with egestion. As noted above, excretion removes metabolic waste. Egestion removes undigested food. Faeces are egested, not excreted. The exam tests this distinction directly.
  2. Stating that fungi are plants. Fungi do not photosynthesise and their cell walls are made of chitin, not cellulose. They belong in their own separate group.
  3. Claiming viruses are alive. The specification treats viruses as non-living. They reproduce, but only inside a host cell, and they do not carry out respiration, nutrition or excretion independently.
  4. Forgetting that protoctists can be pathogenic. Many students associate disease only with bacteria and viruses. Plasmodium (a protoctist) causes malaria, which remains one of the deadliest infectious diseases worldwide.
  5. Mixing up cell wall compositions. Plant cell walls are cellulose. Fungal cell walls are chitin. Bacterial cell walls are neither. This is a favourite comparison question.

Understanding the nature and variety of living organisms is not just about memorising facts for Section 1 questions. It feeds directly into later topics. When you study nutrition, you need to know why plants are autotrophic and animals are heterotrophic. When you study disease and the immune system (in Section 2), you need the pathogen classification covered here. (c) Saprotrophic nutrition: it secretes enzymes onto the dead organic matter (rotting log) and absorbs the soluble products.

Notice how the answer to part (b) does two things: it identifies the chitin cell wall as the key piece of evidence, and it eliminates other possibilities. This kind of reasoning scores well because it shows the examiner you understand the distinctions, not just the definitions.
