Research And Development
Visão Geral
A student designs a stool. The drawings are beautiful: a clean isometric, a slender tapered leg, a seat that floats. She builds it at full size in the workshop and it wobbles, the seat is two hundred millimetres too low, and the joint she drew as a neat line turns out to have nothing holding it together. Nothing in the drawing was wrong. The drawing simply could not tell her any of those things, and no amount of redrawing would have.
Three-dimensional design is the endorsement in which research and development stop being a paper exercise. You are working with gravity, with materials that fail, with hands that have to grip and bodies that have to fit. This note is about the kinds of evidence that only three dimensions can produce: measured site and user surveys, material tests carried out until something breaks, a ladder of maquettes at rising scales, and the drawings that carry information rather than atmosphere.
Objetivos
- Undertake visual research, using primary and secondary sources, and record observations, experiences and ideas in appropriate ways, including first-hand experience of original work
- Develop and realise ideas and outcomes, exploring and reviewing possible solutions and modifying work appropriately
- Understand and use (appropriately and safely) a range of materials, equipment, processes and techniques in two- and/or three dimensions, using information and communication technology where appropriate
- Know and understand a range of work, from contemporary practice, past practice and different cultures, in order to demonstrate an understanding of continuity and change in art, craft and design

- Which question can a 1:20 massing model answer? A) Whether a joint is strong enough B) Whether the overall silhouette works in its space C) Whether the handle is comfortable to grip D) How heavy the finished object will be Answer: B
- Anthropometrics is best described as: A) The study of how materials fail under load B) The measurement of the human body, used to decide the dimensions of objects people use C) A method of scaling drawings up accurately D) The recycling classification of a material Answer: B
- Which drawing type shows what would be visible if the object were cut through? A) Isometric B) Orthographic elevation C) Section D) Exploded view Answer: C
- A candidate's material research consists of six neat swatches labelled with names, densities and typical uses copied from a supplier website. The main weakness is that: A) Six materials is too many to consider B) The information was not generated by the candidate and has no consequence for the design C) Swatches should always be circular D) Density is not a relevant property in design Answer: B
- When a three-dimensional outcome is submitted, the specification expects it to be evidenced by: A) The original object posted to the examiner B) A single photograph on the outcome sheet C) Colour photographs, normally four views per piece from different angles, mounted flat on one A2 sheet D) A written description of the object Answer: C
