Component 1 Reading And Writing: A Full Guide

Visão Geral

Component 1 is the Reading and Writing paper, and it carries the most marks of the three components. In two hours you move through six exercises that climb from finding a single fact to writing a full article in a controlled register. Nothing in it can be revised the night before, because the texts change every session. What never changes is the shape of the paper and exactly what each exercise rewards, and that is the part you can prepare completely.

This guide walks the paper exercise by exercise. You will see the exact marks, the command words decoded, model answers and plans of our own, and the difference between the Core and Extended tiers. There is a timing plan that protects the two long writing tasks, where the biggest blocks of marks live. Learn the architecture now and you walk in knowing what to do with whatever texts appear.

Objetivos

  1. Understand the structure, timing and mark allocation of the Reading and Writing paper.
  2. Apply the right skill to each of the six exercises, from comprehension to summary to extended writing.
  3. Interpret command words and target answers at what the mark scheme rewards.

Nota de Aula

Component 1 is worth 60 marks, more than either Listening or Speaking, so how you spend two hours across its six exercises decides a large part of your grade. The first four exercises test reading: locating facts, matching ideas and attitudes, making notes and writing a summary. The last two test writing: an informal email or letter, then a formal article, report or review. A candidate who reads well but rushes the two writing tasks throws away the single largest blocks of marks on the paper. Knowing the layout lets you give each exercise exactly what it wants and no more.
