Foam Materials
Visão Geral
Foam materials are what graphic and product designers reach for when they need lightweight bulk: a rigid panel that is thick but barely weighs anything, or a block that can be carved into a smooth three-dimensional model in minutes. An exhibition sign mounted on foamboard, a presentation panel on an easel, a sculpted concept model of a new shampoo bottle, and the moulded packaging that cradles a television are all foam in action. Foam turns a small amount of solid polymer into a large, light, useful volume by trapping air inside it.
This note covers the graphic-products foam objectives: how foams are classified into open-cell and closed-cell, rigid and flexible; the stock forms (sheet, board, block) they are bought in; the properties of lightness, rigidity and easy shaping that make them useful; their environmental impact, which is the weak point of most foams; and the two named materials, foamboard and Styrofoam, with the modelling, mounting and packaging jobs each one does best.
Objetivos
- demonstrate knowledge of foam materials and understand their classification, stock forms, properties, environmental impact and uses
- demonstrate knowledge of the following foam materials: - foamboard - Styrofoam.

- What gives foam materials their characteristic combination of thickness and very low weight? A. A dense solid polymer core B. Gas (air) trapped inside a network of thin walls C. A metal reinforcing mesh D. Layers of compressed paper Answer: B
- What is the structure of foamboard? A. A solid block of carvable foam B. A lightweight foam core bonded between two smooth paper or card faces C. Corrugated paper between two liners D. Layers of self-adhesive vinyl Answer: B
- Which foam material is most suitable for carving a smooth, curved three-dimensional presentation model? A. Foamboard B. Styrofoam (extruded polystyrene) C. Open-cell upholstery foam D. Corrugated board Answer: B
- Why are closed-cell foams preferred for protective packaging and rigid panels? A. They absorb water readily B. The sealed gas pockets resist water and help the foam hold its shape C. They are heavier than open-cell foams D. They biodegrade quickly Answer: B
- What is the main environmental drawback of polystyrene foam materials? A. They are made from renewable plant sources B. They are oil-based, persistent and difficult to recycle C. They cannot be cut or shaped D. They dissolve harmlessly in water Answer: B
