Measuring And Marking Out (Graphic products option)
Visão Geral
Before a single cut is made in card or board, the work has to be measured and marked out, and the accuracy of everything that follows depends on getting this stage right. A carton that is creased a millimetre off will not fold square; a logo placed by eye will sit crooked on the panel. In graphic products, measuring and marking out is the quiet discipline that separates a crisp, professional result from an amateur one.
This note covers measuring and marking out for paper, card and board using the right hand tools and equipment, and increasingly using CAD tools as well. It explains how to read a steel rule accurately, how to set out square and parallel lines with set squares and a try square, how to mark and check angles, how to lay out repeated and symmetrical features, and how the same marking-out logic is carried out digitally before sending a job to a cutter or plotter.
Objetivos
- measure and/or mark out, consistently and accurately, using appropriate hand tools and equipment, and/or CAD tools.

- What is a datum in marking out? A. The thickness of the material B. A single fixed reference edge or point from which all measurements are taken C. The final cut line D. The name of a marking-out machine Answer: B
- Why should several features be measured from one datum rather than from each other in turn? A. It is faster to chain measurements B. It uses fewer pencil marks C. It stops small errors accumulating along the work D. It is the only way to use a set square Answer: C
- Which tool is used to mark and test a right angle to an edge? A. Protractor B. Dividers C. Try square D. Steel rule Answer: C
- What is parallax error? A. An error from a blunt pencil B. An error from reading a scale or mark from an angle instead of directly above it C. An error from using the wrong glue D. An error in the CAD file format Answer: B
- In CAD marking out, why are cut lines and crease lines put on separate layers or line styles? A. To make the file smaller B. So the machine knows which lines to cut and which to score C. Because the screen cannot show them together D. To stop the design being copied Answer: B
