Directed Writing: Form, Audience And Purpose

Overzicht

Directed writing is the first task on Paper 2, and it is worth a full 40 marks. You are given one or two short texts on one topic and asked, in a question with two parts, to write in a named form, an article, a letter, a speech, a report or a review, for a particular reader and purpose. The skill is double: you must read the source well enough to weigh its ideas, and you must write the named form well enough to sound like the real thing. Get either half wrong and the marks slip away.

This lesson shows you exactly how the marks split (15 for reading, 5 in part 1(a) and 10 in part 1(b), and 25 for the quality of your writing), what each named form actually demands, and how to evaluate ideas rather than just repeat them. You will see flat openings rewritten into convincing ones, a fully annotated model paragraph, and a complete worked task with a model response. Master this and you have secured the single biggest task on the paper.

Doelstellingen

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of audience, purpose and form in a directed writing task.
  2. Respond to one or more texts in a specified form such as a letter, speech, article or report.
  3. Develop and extend ideas from the source rather than lifting them, evaluating and structuring them for the task.

Lesnotitie

Directed writing is the one Paper 2 question everybody answers, and it carries 40 of the paper's 80 marks. It is not a comprehension exercise and it is not a free composition; it sits between the two. You read one or two short texts on a shared topic, then you tackle one question in two parts: a short structured analysis, part 1(a), worth 5 reading marks, and the directed-writing piece, part 1(b), worth 10 reading and 25 writing marks. The examiner is asking two questions at once. First, have you understood and judged the ideas in the texts? Second, can you write the named form convincingly? Because the writing alone is worth 25 of the 40 marks, this is mostly a test of how well you write, but the 15 reading marks, the 5 in part 1(a) and the 10 in part 1(b), are lost completely if you ignore the texts or simply copy them.
