Global Perspectives - 0457 CIE

Climate Change, Energy And Resources

Overzicht

Climate change is the issue that ties almost every other global topic together. The world keeps warming because we burn coal, oil and gas for the energy that powers our homes, factories and transport, and those same fuels are finite. In Global Perspectives you are not asked to memorise the science for its own sake; you are asked to think about the issue the GP way: to weigh how it looks to a single person, to a country, and to the whole world, to test the evidence and the arguments on both sides, and to reason your way toward fair and workable courses of action.

This note shows you how to do exactly that. You will see the core facts stated with their sources and years, the three perspectives set side by side, the big debates laid out as argument and counter-argument so you can stay balanced, and a set of report and team-project ideas you could actually use. Throughout, the worked examples model the skills the exam rewards: spotting a perspective, evaluating a claim, framing a sharp question and building a line of reasoning.

Doelstellingen

  1. Explain why climate change, energy and resources is an issue of global significance and describe its main causes and consequences.
  2. Compare personal, local/national and global perspectives on climate change, energy and resources, with empathy and supporting evidence.
  3. Evaluate evidence, sources and arguments relating to climate change, energy and resources, distinguishing fact, opinion, bias and vested interest.
  4. Develop a line of reasoning toward possible evidence-based courses of action on climate change, energy and resources, and suggest report and team-project angles.

Lesnotitie

Climate change matters to Global Perspectives because it is genuinely global: the gases released in one country warm the whole planet, and the countries that have emitted the least are often hit hardest. It is also tightly linked to energy and to resources. Most of the warming comes from burning fossil fuels for energy, and those fuels are finite, so the questions of how we power the world and how we share limited resources cannot be separated from the climate question. That interconnection is what makes it such fertile ground for a GP report or team project.
