A Divided Union: Civil Rights In The USA, 1945-74

Overzicht

Black American soldiers returned in 1945 from a war fought against a regime built on racial hierarchy, to a country where in much of the South they could not vote, could not eat in the same restaurants as white Americans and could not send their children to the same schools. The gap between what the United States said about itself and how it treated a tenth of its citizens is the engine of this depth study.

You will study the Red Scare and McCarthyism, the legal and grassroots campaigns that dismantled segregation, the argument within the movement about non-violence and Black Power, the student, women's and anti-war movements, and the Watergate scandal that brought down a president. Throughout, the people forcing the change are the ones making the choices.

Lesnotitie

Segregation in the South rested on state and local laws known collectively as Jim Crow, upheld by the Supreme Court's ruling in Plessy v Ferguson (1896) that separate facilities were constitutional if they were equal. In practice they were never equal: black schools received a fraction of the funding of white schools, and separate carriages, waiting rooms, drinking fountains, parks and hospitals were consistently worse. Voting was restricted by literacy tests administered by white registrars who decided who passed, by poll taxes, and by the threat of losing a job or a home. Enforcement outside the law came from intimidation and from lynching, and the Ku Klux Klan, revived in the twentieth century, operated with the acquiescence of many local authorities.
