The drive to industrialise that followed transformed the Soviet Union from a peasant land into a major industrial power within a single decade. But the speed came at a staggering human price, including a famine that killed millions. Were Stalin's economic policies a triumph of modernisation or a catastrophe for the Soviet people, and how do we weigh the two?
