Individual Project

Overzicht

Most of your other subjects hand you a syllabus and then, at the end, a sealed paper. This one hands you a blank page and asks what you want to find out. The individual project is the larger of the two components in Global Skills Projects, worth 60 marks before scaling and 60 per cent of the qualification, and nobody will ever set you a question on it. You set the question. Then you have to prove you were the right person to answer it.

This lesson is the map of that whole component: what you submit, who signs it off, how the sixty marks are split between deciding, planning, researching, implementing and evaluating, and where the marks are quietly won and lost. You will see why the two middle criteria are worth four times as much as the criterion for picking your topic, why a brilliant finding written up without a plan behind it scores badly, and how the 35 taught hours and 35 independent hours are meant to feel different from each other.

Doelstellingen

  1. The individual project will require the teaching of the necessary skills from this section.
  2. It is expected that approximately 35 guided learning hours will be spent on this taught element and 35 guided learning hours allocated for the student’s independent work and the individual supervision and guidance received.
  3. Teaching of the skills required for the individual project should be agreed by the supervisor as appropriate to the needs of the student and their chosen project.
  4. The taught skills are: project planning and management; research skills; report writing; presentation and oral communication skills; reflecting in terms of creative thinking and decision making with regards to the research project.

Lesnotitie

A candidate in Muscat spends four months finding out whether the brine pumped back into the sea by a desalination plant is changing the seagrass beds along one stretch of coast. A candidate in Riga builds a working scale model of a district heating loop and measures how much heat it loses through uninsulated pipe. A candidate in Bogota interviews forty classmates about why they stopped cycling to school. All three sit the same qualification, and none of them sits an exam. Their marks come from what they submitted and from the record of how they got there.
