Writing Guides And Leaflets
Overzicht
An article wants you to agree and a speech wants you to act. These two forms want something stranger: they want you to succeed at something. A guide is read by somebody who is halfway through doing the thing it describes. A leaflet is picked up, scanned for about ten seconds, and then either kept or dropped in a bin by the door. Neither reader is reading you from beginning to end, and writing as though they were is the single commonest way to lose marks here.
This note covers the two functional forms the specification names. You will learn how to write for somebody who is scanning, why the most valuable sentences in any guide are the ones about what goes wrong, and how to make a leaflet look like a leaflet without turning it into a page of bullet points that cannot demonstrate a single thing the mark scheme is looking for.
