Understanding Literary Heritage Texts
Overzicht
A literary heritage text is one written long enough ago that its world is not yours. Dickens's London, Shakespeare's Verona and Austen's Hertfordshire all run on rules nobody explains to you, because the first readers already knew them. Knowing such a text well means more than being able to retell the story: it means being able to put your finger on the exact moment a character changes, and to say why that moment is the one that matters.
This note builds the first of the three heritage skills. You will learn what close knowledge looks like in practice, how a critical voice differs from an enthusiastic one, and how to build an argument out of short, precise textual reference rather than long stretches of retelling. The examples come from Great Expectations, Romeo and Juliet and The Merchant of Venice.
