Overzicht
Every craft has a vocabulary, and poetry's is unusually old. A pattern of stresses named by the Greeks, a fourteen line shape imported from Italy in the sixteenth century and a rhyme scheme borrowed from village songs are all still in use, and the poets in your anthology chose between them deliberately. Knowing the names lets you describe those choices quickly and precisely.
The point is never the label. It is that a villanelle keeps circling back on itself, a sonnet argues and then turns, a ballad trails off at the end of every fourth line, and free verse breaks wherever the poet decides the silence should fall. This note builds the toolkit, and shows you how to make each term earn its place in a sentence.
