Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tropical cyclones threaten millions of people every year, yet communities continue to build and farm in their shadow. Understanding why people stay, what makes some populations more vulnerable than others, and how these hazards play out in real places is central to the Hazardous Environments topic.
In this lesson you will examine the reasons people live in hazardous areas, explore the physical, social and economic factors that determine vulnerability, and study the shorter-term and longer-term impacts of three case studies: an earthquake, a volcano and a tropical cyclone. You will distinguish primary from secondary effects and categorise impacts as social, economic or environmental - skills tested across both Papers 1 and 2.
