Environment, Pollution And Conservation

Overzicht

Every breath of air, glass of water and living creature around us depends on a healthy environment, yet human activity is polluting that environment and pushing other species toward extinction faster than at almost any time in history. This is a different problem from climate change, even though the two overlap: here the focus is the dirt we put into the air, water and land, the wildlife we are losing, and the work of conservation that tries to protect what remains. In Global Perspectives you learn to look at all of this through more than one lens and to reason about it fairly.

This note models that GP thinking. You will meet the core facts about pollution, biodiversity loss and conservation, each with its source and year, then see how the issue looks to a person, to different countries, and to the world. You will work through the big debates as argument and counter-argument, line up realistic courses of action with their trade-offs, and pick up report and team-project ideas you could genuinely use.

Doelstellingen

  1. Explain why environment, pollution and conservation is an issue of global significance and describe its main causes and consequences.
  2. Compare personal, local/national and global perspectives on environment, pollution and conservation, with empathy and supporting evidence.
  3. Evaluate evidence, sources and arguments relating to environment, pollution and conservation, distinguishing fact, opinion, bias and vested interest.
  4. Develop a line of reasoning toward possible evidence-based courses of action on environment, pollution and conservation, and suggest report and team-project angles.

Lesnotitie

Pollution and the loss of nature are global because they ignore borders and because they undermine the systems every country relies on. Plastic dumped on one coast washes up on another; polluted air drifts between nations; a species lost is lost for the whole planet. Healthy ecosystems give us clean water, pollinate our crops, and support fishing and tourism, so damaging them is not only an ethical loss but an economic one. That mix of shared harm and shared dependence is what makes the topic so rich for a GP report or team project.
