The Nazi Regime (a) How Effectively Did The Nazis Control Germany, 1933–45?

Overzicht

By 1934 Hitler ruled Germany alone, but ruling a country and controlling its people are not the same thing. How do you make sixty million people obey, cheer and inform on each other? The Nazis answered with a twin strategy: terror through the secret police and the concentration camp, and persuasion through relentless propaganda, censorship and the schooling of the young. For some Germans it brought jobs and pride; for others it brought fear, prison or death.

This lesson examines how effectively the Nazis controlled Germany from 1933 to 1945. You will study the police state and propaganda machine, the control of education, youth, women and the churches, the persecution of Jews and other groups, the opposition that did exist, and how total war changed everyday life. The goal is a balanced judgement of just how complete that control really was.

Lesnotitie

This is one of the richest topics in the whole syllabus because it asks a genuinely difficult question: was Nazi Germany a totalitarian state that controlled everything, or a regime that mixed fear with real popularity and never silenced everyone? Cambridge examiners reward answers that handle both terror and consent, and that recognise both the opposition that survived and the many Germans who genuinely supported Hitler. Mastering this topic teaches you to argue how far, the skill at the heart of the part (c) question.
