Narrative Writing
Overzicht
The narrative option in Section C is the one candidates choose for the wrong reason and lose marks for in the same way every year. They choose it because a story sounds easier than an argument, and then they try to fit a kidnapping, a car chase and a hospital scene into fifty minutes. What the examiner wanted was one afternoon, two people, and something that changes.
This note is about scale, shape and endings. You will learn how much story actually fits in an hour, the five beats that give a short narrative a spine, why showing beats telling in a way you can measure rather than merely repeat, how to use dialogue so that it reveals instead of filling space, and how to finish without the three endings that sink otherwise good stories.
