Length, Area And Volume
Overzicht
Every tank that needs filling, every field that needs fencing and every silo that needs building starts with the same question: how much space does this shape take up, or how far around it does a boundary run? This topic collects the area formulas for flat shapes, the length and area formulas for a slice of a circle, and the volume formulas for the solids that appear again and again on both 4MB1 papers.
You will practise choosing the right formula for a composite shape built from simpler pieces, work with arc length and sector area as fractions of a full circle, and calculate the volumes of cuboids, prisms, cylinders, pyramids, cones and spheres. Along the way you will see exactly why a pyramid's volume is one third of the prism with the same base and height, rather than simply being told to accept it.
