Selecting And Synthesising Information
Overzicht
The highest-tariff reading tasks do not just ask what a text says; they ask you to do something with it. You take ideas out of one or more texts, choose the ones that serve your purpose, weave them together and recast them in a new form, a speech, a letter, an article, for a new audience. This is where reading and writing meet, and where the biggest blocks of marks on both papers are decided.
This lesson teaches you to select material for a clear purpose and audience, to synthesise ideas from across a text rather than copy them in order, and to develop a borrowed idea into your own. We model each move on short invented texts, contrast a copied response with a developed one, annotate a model paragraph, and finish with an exam-style task marked the way the criteria reward it.
