When household incomes rise quickly, the change shows up in daily life almost as fast as it shows up in economic statistics: what people eat, what they watch, what they buy and what they aspire to can shift within a single generation. 'Emerging economies' is the term used for countries whose incomes are rising rapidly as they industrialise and integrate into the global economy, and the cultural change that comes with rising income is neither purely positive nor purely a loss.
In this lesson you will examine changing patterns of wealth and poverty in emerging economies, how rising income drives cultural change, and the genuine tensions this creates around identity, tradition and the environment.
