Dyed Fabrics
Overzicht
Dyeing is the one textile process where the colour goes inside the material. A print sits on the surface and can crock off; a dyed colour is chemically attached to the fibre itself, so the cloth is coloured all the way through, it stays as flexible as it was, and a translucent cloth stays translucent. That single difference is why some ideas can only be dyed and not printed.
This note treats dyeing as chemistry that a designer controls. You will learn which dye class attaches to which fibre and why, how a natural dye differs from a synthetic one in practice rather than in theory, how an indigo vat can be blue in the air and yellow in the bucket, and how resist methods from shibori, bandhani and batik turn the act of stopping the dye into the design.
