Descriptive Writing
Overzicht
Descriptive writing is the Section C option that looks kind and turns out not to be. A story has a plot to pull the reader forward and a discursive essay has an argument. A description has neither, which means that everything holding the reader in place has to be put there on purpose: the order of the paragraphs, the movement of the eye, the precision of the nouns.
This note is about how to build that structure and how to write sentences worth structuring. You will learn five ways to organise a piece with no events in it, why a concrete noun beats three adjectives every time, how to use the four senses that are not sight without producing a checklist, and how to tell a comparison that is doing work from one that is only decorating.
