Research And Development

Overzicht

A contact sheet is an unusually honest document. Thirty-six small frames, of which perhaps two are any good, several are nearly right, and the rest record a photographer walking slowly towards an idea. Nobody hangs a contact sheet on a wall. But in an Edexcel portfolio it is often the single most valuable page on the sheet, because it shows the thinking that a finished print hides.

Photography is the endorsement where the gap between research and outcome is smallest: the same act that investigates also records, and the same file that was a test can become the final image. That makes it dangerously easy to submit twelve good photographs and no development at all. This note works through the project in the order it actually happens, before the shutter, at the shutter, and after it, and shows where the evidence has to be left at each stage.

Doelstellingen

  1. Undertake visual research, using primary and secondary sources, and record observations, experiences and ideas in appropriate ways, including first-hand experience of original work
  2. Develop and realise ideas and outcomes, exploring and reviewing possible solutions and modifying work appropriately
  3. Understand and use (appropriately and safely) a range of materials, equipment, processes and techniques in two- and/or three dimensions, using information and communication technology where appropriate
  4. Know and understand a range of work, from contemporary practice, past practice and different cultures, in order to demonstrate an understanding of continuity and change in art, craft and design

Lesnotitie

This is the trap specific to this endorsement, and it catches capable photographers rather than weak ones. A student who takes attractive pictures produces a folder of attractive pictures, selects the best twelve, prints them beautifully and submits. The work is genuinely good and the marks are mediocre, because two of the four assessment objectives ask about process. The examiner can see what was achieved and has no way of seeing how, whether alternatives existed, or whether anything was tested.
