Political Power And Action

Overzicht

Who gets to decide, and how can ordinary people make their voices count? Political power and action is the study of how decisions are made in a society and how citizens try to shape them, through voting, campaigning, protest, the courts and the media. The Economist Intelligence Unit's Democracy Index 2024 reported that fewer than 7 percent of the world's people lived in a full democracy, while around 39 percent lived under authoritarian rule, so this is not an abstract question. It touches the daily life of almost everyone on the planet.

This note does not tell you which political system is best. Global Perspectives never does. Instead it teaches you to see the issue from a citizen's, a country's and the world's point of view, to weigh genuine arguments against their counter-arguments, to judge sources that are often heavily spun, and to reason toward realistic action. That balanced, evidence-led habit of mind is what your report, your team project and Paper 1 all reward.

Doelstellingen

  1. Explain why political power and action is an issue of global significance and describe its main causes and consequences.
  2. Compare personal, local/national and global perspectives on political power and action, with empathy and supporting evidence.
  3. Evaluate evidence, sources and arguments relating to political power and action, distinguishing fact, opinion, bias and vested interest.
  4. Develop a line of reasoning toward possible evidence-based courses of action on political power and action, and suggest report and team-project angles.

Lesnotitie

Political power is the ability to influence or control what a society does: who makes the laws, who spends the public money, and whose voice is heard. Political action is what people do to gain, use or resist that power, from casting a vote to signing a petition, joining a party, protesting, lobbying, or using the courts and the press. Every other global issue, from climate change to poverty to conflict, is shaped by decisions made through political power, which is why Global Perspectives treats it as a topic in its own right.
