Some quantities grow together, others shrink as one another grows, and the pattern is rarely a straight multiplication. Variation gives you a compact algebraic way to describe exactly how two quantities are linked, whether one is proportional to the other, to its square, to its cube, or to its reciprocal.
Once you can spot the type of variation from a sentence and convert it into an equation with a constant k, every problem becomes the same three-step routine: find k, write the formula, then use it. This topic builds that routine until it is automatic.
