Overzicht
Everyone agrees the development gap should close. Almost nobody agrees on how. Some argue that only large sums of aid, spent fast, can break a poverty trap. Others argue that aid props up bad government and that fairer trade rules would do more. A third group says the answer is neither, and that lasting change starts with what communities decide for themselves.
This lesson takes that argument seriously. You will map the international strategies on offer, from bilateral aid and debt relief to the Sustainable Development Goals, then set out the strongest version of each position in the debate. Finally you will weigh top-down against bottom-up projects using real schemes in the United Kingdom and Kenya, and learn to write the balanced judgement that high-tariff questions demand.
