Planning

Overzicht

A brilliant idea on paper is worthless if nobody can make it. Planning is the stage where a chosen design becomes a set of instructions clear enough that another person, or a workshop, could build the product without ever speaking to you. It is the bridge between designing and making: the working drawings that pin down every dimension, the production plan that puts the stages of making in order, and the lists that say exactly which materials, components and finishes are needed and why.

This note works through the 0445 planning objectives: producing accurate working drawings with full manufacturing detail; writing a staged production plan; specifying and justifying materials, components and finishes; knowing the stock forms, types and sizes that materials are actually sold in; and weaving social, ethical and environmental thinking into the plan. Real, concrete examples are used throughout so you can see what a mark-worthy plan looks like, not just what one should contain.

Doelstellingen

  1. produce clear and accurate working drawings which include full details required to make the product
  2. produce a production plan which includes the stages of making
  3. specify and justify materials, components and finishes required to make the product
  4. show a knowledge of available stock forms, types and sizes of the classes of materials listed in section 1.5
  5. show awareness of social, ethical and environmental factors in planning for production.

Lesnotitie

In the 0445 coursework a strong, detailed plan is assessed in its own right, not just as a stepping stone to the finished product. The examiner is asking a simple question: could a competent maker build this product from your documents alone? That means your plan has to do three jobs at once. It must describe the product precisely (the working drawings), describe the route to making it (the production plan and its stages), and describe the resources it consumes (materials, components, finishes and their justification). A plan that only contains a tidy drawing, with no sequence of operations and no material reasoning, leaves most of the marks on the table.
