Human Population Density, Distribution And Structure

Overzicht

Stand on a quiet hillside in Wyoming and you may share a square kilometre with two other people. Step into central Monaco and you are one of nearly twenty six thousand. Same planet, wildly different crowding. Three simple ideas let geographers and environmental managers describe this: how many people live in an area (density), where they choose to live within it (distribution), and how the population is built up from young, working and elderly people (structure).

In this lesson you will learn to calculate population density, explain why people cluster near coasts, rivers and cities while deserts and mountains stay empty, and read a population pyramid at a glance. You will compare the youthful pyramid of a low-income country with the top-heavy one of a high-income country, and meet the World Bank income groups used to classify economies. These are the tools every later population and resources topic quietly relies on.

Doelstellingen

  1. 7.1.1 Describe where people live in the world in terms of population density and population distribution, limited to: (a) sparsely populated places contain few people and densely populated places contain many people (b) population density: the number of people living in an area, usually measured in people per km2 (c) population distribution: how people are spread over an area.
  2. 7.1.2 Interpret population pyramids to describe population structure, limited to: (a) young and elderly dependent population (b) working population (c) female and male population.
  3. 7.1.3 Describe the income groups the World Bank uses to classify the economies of different countries, limited to: (a) low-income countries (LICs) (b) middle-income countries (MICs) (c) high-income countries (HICs).
  4. 7.1.4 Compare the population structure of an LIC and an HIC.

Lesnotitie

How many people live somewhere, and how they are spread out and made up, shapes almost every environmental challenge a place faces. A densely packed city must manage waste, water and clean air for millions in a small space; a country with a very young population must build schools fast, while one with an ageing population must plan for pensions and care. Before you can manage these pressures you must be able to measure and describe a population precisely, and that is what density, distribution and structure let you do.
