Natural dyes include those derived from plants (indigo, madder, turmeric, onion skins), insects (cochineal) and minerals. Fibre-reactive dyes bond permanently with cellulose fibres like cotton and linen but will not adhere to polyester. Acid dyes work on protein fibres such as wool and silk.

Garment construction demands understanding of how flat fabric becomes a three-dimensional form that fits a body. Illustration serves as a design communication tool, not a substitute for making.

Sustainability is explicitly mentioned in the specification and increasingly important in global fashion practice. If you choose this area, consider how your design choices address waste, material sourcing and ethical production. European fashion education, from Antwerp to London to Milan, has placed growing emphasis on sustainable practice, and reflecting this awareness in your portfolio demonstrates contemporary relevance.

Soft furnishings

Soft furnishings involves designing constructed textiles for use in furnished interiors, utilising their tactile and physical qualities for intended purposes. This area connects textile design with interior design, focusing on how textiles function within domestic and commercial spaces.

The specification asks you to develop creative use of the tactile and physical qualities of textiles in an interior space. This might involve designing cushion covers, curtain fabrics, wall hangings, table runners or upholstery textiles. The key distinction from other areas is that soft furnishing textiles must be fit for purpose. A curtain fabric needs to drape well. An upholstery fabric needs durability. A wall hanging needs visual impact at a distance.

When working in this area, consider how your textile will function in its intended environment. Scale, colour, texture and weight all matter differently when the work is viewed from across a room rather than held in the hand.

Stitched and/or embellished textiles

This area covers designing stitched and embellished textiles for use in creative and commercial industries such as fashion, costume and interiors. The specification includes application and incorporation of media, objects and embellishments, as well as hand and machine stitching.

Embellishment transforms a plain textile into something more complex and visually rich. Techniques include embroidery (hand and machine), applique, beading, sequin work, quilting, smocking and the attachment of found objects. The range of possibilities is vast, from delicate hand embroidery in the tradition of Indian zardozi or French haute couture beading, to raw, experimental assemblages that incorporate non-textile materials.

  • Spreading too thin. Attempting to cover five or six areas results in superficial work that does not demonstrate the depth of investigation AO1 requires. Focus on fewer areas and explore them thoroughly.
  • Neglecting the making. In fashion design especially, students sometimes produce extensive illustration and mood boards but submit very little actual textile work. The specification assesses textile design, not fashion illustration alone.
  • Ignoring context. Each area has a rich cultural and historical context. A portfolio of dyed fabrics that makes no reference to any dyeing tradition, contemporary practitioner or cultural context misses marks available under AO1.
  • Treating digital as a shortcut. Digital tools can produce impressive-looking results quickly, but a portfolio of digital prints with no evidence of material experimentation or hands-on making does not satisfy AO2.
