  • For extended-answer questions, plan before you write. A 6-mark question needs six distinct points. Jot them down in the margin first, then write them up as clear sentences. This stops you from repeating the same idea in different words.
  • Do not leave blanks. If you are unsure, write something relevant. A partial answer can pick up marks; an empty space cannot.
Command words are the key to Paper 1. The difference between "identify" (name it), "describe" (say what it is), "explain" (say why) and "discuss" (give arguments for and against) determines how you structure every answer. Before you start revising content, make sure you understand what each command word requires. A student who knows the content but misreads the command word will consistently underperform.

How to approach Paper 2

Paper 2 is 3 hours for 100 marks. You will work through a scenario that requires you to use several software applications. The tasks are connected by a common theme, such as organising an event or running a small business.

  • Read the entire scenario before you start. Understanding the context helps you make better decisions about formatting, layout and which software features to use. A newsletter for a youth club looks different from a financial report for a manager.
  • Save your work frequently. Technical problems happen. If you lose work because you did not save, you lose the marks that went with it.
  • Follow instructions precisely. If the task says "use a 12-point sans serif font," do exactly that. If it says "sort by surname in ascending order," do not sort by first name or in descending order. Precision is what earns marks in practical tasks.
  • Check your printouts. Some tasks require you to print in specific views (formula view, landscape, with gridlines). Verify that your printout matches what the question asked for before you move on.

A revision timeline that works
