The "World around us" theme in the Edexcel IGCSE (4GN1) German specification covers five outward-looking sub-topics, and it supplies the vocabulary and reasoning structures that examiners use to test your ability to discuss broader issues in German.
Where other themes in the specification focus on personal experience, this one asks you to think about the wider world: the environment, the weather, how we travel, the media we consume and the technology we use. For the igcse 4gn1 the world around us section, the five sub-topics are environmental issues, weather and climate, travel and transport, the media, and information and communication technology. Each one requires specific vocabulary, particular grammatical constructions and the ability to express and justify opinions on topics that extend beyond your immediate daily life.
As your Edexcel IGCSE German The world around us guide, these edexcel igcse german revision notes work through each sub-topic systematically, with vocabulary tables, grammar in context, worked examples and self-check questions. The approach is analytical: each section identifies the structures most likely to earn marks and shows you how to deploy them.
Environmental issues
This sub-topic requires you to discuss environmental problems, suggest solutions and express opinions about responsibility. The vocabulary is technical but manageable, and the grammar leans heavily on modal verbs and conditional structures.
| German | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| die Umwelt | environment | Wir muessen die Umwelt schuetzen. |
| die Umweltverschmutzung | environmental pollution | Die Umweltverschmutzung ist ein grosses Problem. |
| der Klimawandel | climate change | Der Klimawandel betrifft alle Laender. |
| recyceln / wiederverwerten | to recycle | In Deutschland recycelt man sehr viel. |
| Energie sparen | to save energy | Man sollte Energie sparen, wo es moeglich ist. |
| der Muell | rubbish/waste | Es gibt zu viel Muell auf den Strassen. |
| die erneuerbare Energie | renewable energy | Erneuerbare Energie ist die Zukunft. |
| der Treibhauseffekt | greenhouse effect | Der Treibhauseffekt fuehrt zu hoeheren Temperaturen. |
Environmental topics in the edexcel igcse german exam often appear in reading comprehension passages and as writing prompts. The key grammatical structure is "man sollte" + infinitive (one should): "Man sollte weniger Plastik benutzen" (One should use less plastic). Upgrade this with "um... zu" clauses: "Man sollte weniger Plastik benutzen, um die Umwelt zu schuetzen" (One should use less plastic to protect the environment).
Weather and climate
Weather vocabulary is tested primarily in listening and reading tasks. You need to understand weather forecasts, describe weather conditions and discuss seasonal patterns.
| German | English |
|---|---|
| Es regnet / Es ist regnerisch | It is raining / It is rainy |
| Es schneit | It is snowing |
| Es ist sonnig / bewölkt / windig / neblig | It is sunny / cloudy / windy / foggy |
| die Temperatur | temperature |
| das Gewitter | thunderstorm |
| der Grad | degree |
| Es wird kaelter / waermer | It is getting colder / warmer |
| die Hitzewelle | heatwave |
Weather vocabulary connects to holiday and travel topics from the "Home and abroad" theme. A listening passage might describe holiday weather, or a reading text might include a weather forecast as context for travel plans. The impersonal construction "es" + verb is the standard pattern: "Es regnet," "Es schneit," "Es donnert" (It is thundering).
For more complex responses, connect weather to its effects: "Wegen des schlechten Wetters konnten wir nicht schwimmen gehen" (Because of the bad weather we could not go swimming). Note that "wegen" takes the genitive case: "wegen des Wetters," not "wegen dem Wetter" (though the dative is common in spoken German, the genitive is more accurate and earns marks for grammatical precision).
Travel and transport
This sub-topic covers different modes of transport, describing journeys and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of various travel options. It overlaps with the "Home and abroad" theme but focuses more on the comparative and evaluative language.
Note that "mit" always takes the dative case: "mit dem Zug," "mit der Bahn," "mit dem Auto." This is a fixed construction that should become automatic. When comparing transport modes, use comparative adjectives: "schneller" (faster), "billiger" (cheaper), "umweltfreundlicher" (more environmentally friendly), "bequemer" (more comfortable).
A strong writing or speaking response on this topic connects transport to environmental themes: "Meiner Meinung nach sollten mehr Leute oeffentliche Verkehrsmittel benutzen, weil es gut fuer die Umwelt ist und man im Zug lesen oder arbeiten kann" (In my opinion, more people should use public transport because it is good for the environment and you can read or work on the train).
The media
This sub-topic covers different types of media, their role in daily life and opinions about media content and influence. The vocabulary spans traditional and digital media.
| German | English |
|---|---|
| die Nachrichten | news |
| die Zeitschrift / die Zeitung | magazine / newspaper |
| die Sendung / die Serie | programme / series |
| die Werbung | advertising |
| der Dokumentarfilm | documentary |
| die sozialen Medien | social media |
| die Schlagzeile | headline |
| der Einfluss | influence |
Media topics appear in reading passages and as discussion points in the speaking exam. Practise expressing balanced opinions: "Einerseits sind soziale Medien nuetzlich, weil man mit Freunden in Kontakt bleiben kann. Andererseits koennen sie suechtig machen und man verbringt zu viel Zeit am Bildschirm" (On one hand, social media are useful because you can stay in contact with friends. On the other hand, they can be addictive and you spend too much time in front of the screen). The "einerseits... andererseits" (on one hand... on the other hand) construction demonstrates the kind of balanced argument that earns strong marks.
Information and communication technology
This sub-topic focuses on how technology is used in daily life, its benefits and its drawbacks. It connects closely to the media sub-topic but emphasises personal technology use.
- das Handy / das Smartphone (mobile phone): "Ich benutze mein Handy jeden Tag fuer alles."
- die App / die Anwendung (app/application): "Es gibt viele nuetzliche Apps zum Sprachenlernen."
- herunterladen (to download): "Ich lade Musik und Podcasts herunter."
- das Internet: "Ohne das Internet waere das Leben schwieriger."
- die Datensicherheit (data security): "Datensicherheit ist heutzutage sehr wichtig."
For this sub-topic, the exam rewards candidates who can discuss technology critically. "Das Internet ist toll" is a start, but "Das Internet hat viele Vorteile, zum Beispiel kann man schnell Informationen finden und mit Menschen auf der ganzen Welt kommunizieren. Allerdings gibt es auch Nachteile, wie Cybermobbing und den Verlust der Privatsphaere" (The internet has many advantages, for example you can quickly find information and communicate with people all over the world. However, there are also disadvantages, such as cyberbullying and the loss of privacy) is what earns strong marks on the edexcel igcse german exam.
Common mistakes in The world around us theme
- Confusing "wegen" + genitive with "weil" + clause. "Wegen" is a preposition followed by a noun phrase in the genitive: "wegen des Klimawandels" (because of climate change). "Weil" is a conjunction followed by a subordinate clause: "weil der Klimawandel ein Problem ist" (because climate change is a problem). Both mean "because of," but they work differently in the sentence.
- Using "machen" for everything. German has specific verbs where English uses "make" or "do." "Eine Reise machen" (to take a trip) is correct, but "das Internet machen" is not. Say "das Internet benutzen" (to use the internet) or "im Internet surfen" (to surf the internet).
- Forgetting separable prefixes in subordinate clauses. In a subordinate clause, the separable verb rejoins: "Ich weiss, dass er Musik herunterlaed" (I know that he downloads music). The prefix and the verb come together at the end. In a main clause, they separate: "Er laed Musik herunter."
- Weak comparative structures. Instead of "X ist gut und Y ist schlecht," use "X ist besser als Y, weil..." or "Im Vergleich zu X ist Y..." (Compared to X, Y is...). Comparative structures are explicitly tested and rewarded.
Practice questions for self-checking
- Was kann man tun, um die Umwelt zu schuetzen? Nenne drei Beispiele. (What can you do to protect the environment? Give three examples.)
- Beschreibe das Wetter in deinem Land im Sommer und im Winter. (Describe the weather in your country in summer and winter.)
- Wie faehrst du zur Schule und warum? Was waere besser? (How do you get to school and why? What would be better?)
- Welche Rolle spielen soziale Medien in deinem Leben? Was sind die Vor- und Nachteile? (What role do social media play in your life? What are the advantages and disadvantages?)
