Paper 2 is where your bookkeeping skills are tested at their highest level. You have 75 minutes to prepare financial statements from given data, and the marks go to students who combine accuracy with clear presentation.

Edexcel IGCSE Accounting Paper 2 (Written Paper 2) is 1 hour 15 minutes long, carries 50 marks, and covers Sections 4 and 5 of the 4AC1 specification: the preparation of financial statements and accounting for end of period adjustments. The paper typically contains two substantial multi-part questions. One usually involves preparing a complete set of financial statements (income statement and statement of financial position) from a trial balance with adjustments. The other may focus on partnership accounts, incomplete records, accounting ratios, or manufacturing accounts.

This is a different beast from Paper 1. Where Paper 1 tests breadth across many topics, Paper 2 tests depth on a smaller number. Knowing the material is necessary, but it is not sufficient. You also need to present your answers in the format that examiners expect, apply adjustments accurately, and manage your time so you can complete both questions.

Timing: how to spend your 75 minutes

With 50 marks in 75 minutes, you have 1.5 minutes per mark. That is more generous than Paper 1, but the questions are more demanding in terms of layout and calculation.

TaskSuggested time
Reading both questions carefully before starting5 minutes
Question with more marks (typically 28-30)40-42 minutes
Question with fewer marks (typically 20-22)23-25 minutes
Final check: do the statements balance?5 minutes
Always check the balance. If your statement of financial position does not balance (total assets does not equal total liabilities plus equity), something is wrong. Use the last five minutes to trace the error. Common culprits: a depreciation charge included in the income statement but not deducted from the asset in the statement of financial position, or an accrual included as an expense but forgotten as a current liability.

What the questions look like

Question type 1: financial statements from a trial balance

This is the signature question of Paper 2. You receive a trial balance and a list of additional information (adjustments). Your task is to prepare:

  • An income statement showing revenue, cost of sales, gross profit, expenses and profit for the year
  • A statement of financial position showing non-current assets (at carrying amount), current assets, current liabilities, net assets, and equity

The adjustments typically include some combination of:

  • Closing inventory (to be included in cost of sales and as a current asset)
  • Depreciation (to be charged as an expense and deducted from the asset's carrying amount)
  • Irrecoverable debts to be written off
  • Provision for irrecoverable debts (to be adjusted)
  • Prepayments (other receivables)
  • Accruals (other payables)

Worked approach: systematic adjustment processing

When you receive the trial balance and adjustments, work through them one at a time using this method:

  1. Read all adjustments first. Do not start writing until you have read every note. Some adjustments interact (e.g., you must write off an irrecoverable debt before calculating the provision on the remaining receivables).
  2. Process each adjustment with a two-column note. For each adjustment, write down: (a) the effect on the income statement, and (b) the effect on the statement of financial position.
  3. Prepare the income statement first. Start with revenue, calculate cost of sales (using opening inventory + purchases - closing inventory), arrive at gross profit, then deduct each expense (including depreciation, irrecoverable debts, and the change in provision).
  4. Prepare the statement of financial position second. Use the trial balance figures adjusted for depreciation (carrying amount = cost - accumulated depreciation), add prepayments to current assets, add accruals to current liabilities, and carry down the profit figure from the income statement into equity.

Question type 2: partnership financial statements

Partnership questions add the appropriation account and partners' current accounts to the standard financial statement preparation. The Edexcel IGCSE Accounting mark scheme awards separate marks for:

  • Correct treatment of interest on loan
  • Correct calculation of partners' salaries
  • Correct calculation of interest on capital
  • Correct division of residual profit in the agreed ratio
  • Correct entries in each partner's current account

Question type 3: incomplete records

These questions give you limited information and ask you to reconstruct missing figures. The key technique is building control accounts (receivables or payables) to find the balancing figure for revenue or purchases.

Question type 4: accounting ratios

Ratio questions carry marks for both the calculation and the interpretation. The Edexcel IGCSE Accounting past papers show that interpretation marks are often lost because students state what the ratio is without explaining what it means for the business.

What earns marksWhat loses marks
"The gross profit percentage has fallen from 42% to 35%, which could indicate that purchase costs have risen or that selling prices have been reduced to stay competitive.""The gross profit percentage has gone down."
"The current ratio of 1.3:1 suggests the business may struggle to meet short-term obligations if inventory cannot be sold quickly.""The current ratio is 1.3."

Edexcel accounting exam technique: Edexcel IGCSE Accounting mark scheme patterns

The Edexcel IGCSE Accounting mark scheme for Paper 2 rewards precision and format:

  • Headings earn marks. "Income Statement of [Name] for the year ended [Date]" is a mark. Missing the heading loses that mark even if every figure below it is correct.
  • Subtotals earn marks. Gross profit, total expenses, profit for the year, total non-current assets, total current assets, net assets, closing capital: each is a separate mark.
  • The own-figure-rule (OFR) applies throughout. If your gross profit is wrong because you miscalculated cost of sales, you can still earn full marks for the expenses section and the profit for the year calculation if your method is correct using your own gross profit figure.
  • Adjustments carry double marks. A depreciation charge appears in the income statement (as an expense) and in the statement of financial position (reducing the asset's carrying amount). Getting one right and the other wrong earns half the adjustment marks.

Common pitfalls on Paper 2

  1. Forgetting closing inventory. Closing inventory must appear in two places: as a deduction from cost of sales in the income statement, and as a current asset in the statement of financial position. Missing either one throws both statements out.
  2. Adding depreciation instead of deducting it. Depreciation reduces the carrying amount of an asset. In the statement of financial position, show the cost, the accumulated depreciation, and the carrying amount. In the income statement, the annual charge is an expense.
  3. Applying the provision rate to the wrong figure. Always calculate the provision for irrecoverable debts on trade receivables AFTER writing off any specific debts. Calculating it before the write-off overstates the provision.
  4. Leaving the statement of financial position unbalanced. If it does not balance, something is missing or doubled. The most common causes are a missing accrual in current liabilities or a prepayment omitted from current assets.
  5. Rushing the partnership appropriation account. Interest on loans, salaries, interest on capital and profit share must be calculated in the correct order. Interest on a partner's loan is a charge before the appropriation; it reduces the profit available for division.

A practice strategy for Paper 2

PhaseWhat to do
Phase 1: Component practicePractise individual adjustments in isolation. Calculate depreciation for ten different assets. Process five prepayment/accrual scenarios. Prepare three partnership appropriation accounts. Do not time yourself yet.
Phase 2: Full questionsWork through complete Paper 2 questions from Edexcel IGCSE Accounting past papers. Start without timing, then move to strict 75-minute conditions as your confidence grows.
Phase 3: Mark scheme analysisAfter each practice paper, compare your answers line by line against the mark scheme. For every mark lost, note whether the error was a calculation mistake, a formatting issue, a missing adjustment, or a misunderstanding. The pattern of your errors tells you exactly where to focus your remaining revision.
The igcse 4ac1 paper 2 tips that separate strong candidates from the rest come down to structure. Know the layout of every financial statement before you walk into the exam. Know where each adjustment lands (income statement, statement of financial position, or both). Know the order of the partnership appropriation account. When these structures are automatic, your brain is free to focus on the numbers rather than the format, and that is when accuracy improves.

Self-check questions

  1. State three errors that would not be revealed by a trial balance, and for each, explain why the trial balance would still balance.
  2. A suspense account has a debit balance of $1,200. The following errors are discovered: (a) sales of $400 were posted to the debit side of the sales account, (b) a payment of $800 for rent was not posted to the rent account. Show the journal entries to correct these errors and clear the suspense account.
  3. Explain the purpose of a control account and describe how a sales ledger control account helps detect errors in the individual customer accounts.

Paper 2 rewards preparation. The questions follow a predictable structure, the Edexcel IGCSE Accounting exam tips that matter most are about format and method, and the mark scheme is transparent about where each mark is awarded. Work through past papers, study the mark schemes, and practise until the format is second nature. When you sit down in the exam and see a trial balance with six adjustments, you should feel not panic but familiarity, because you have done this before.
