Referencing Source Material in Your Answers

This is the single most important technique for Paper 2, and it is where the largest number of marks are lost.

The mark scheme for Paper 2 frequently contains phrases like "reference to the source," "using data from the table," or "from the case study." These are not suggestions. They are requirements. An answer that makes a valid environmental point but does not connect it to the specific source material in front of you will not receive full marks.

The weak answer is not wrong. But it could have been written without ever looking at the insert. The strong answer proves that the student read, interpreted, and connected two pieces of source evidence. That is what Paper 2 rewards.

Exam Note: Use figure and table references explicitly. Write "Fig. 1 shows..." or "According to Table 2..." or "The case study states that..." This signals to the examiner that you are working with the source, not just writing from memory. Mark schemes reward this directness.

Data Interpretation: The Skills That Score

Paper 2 frequently presents data in tables, bar charts, line graphs, pie charts, and climate graphs. Each format requires a slightly different reading technique, but the same underlying logic applies: describe the pattern, quote the data, and explain what it means in context.

When a question asks you to "describe the trend shown in Fig. 3," follow this structure:

  1. State the overall direction: Is the value increasing, decreasing, or staying roughly constant?
  2. Quote start and end values: "CO2 emissions rose from 320 million tonnes in 1990 to 580 million tonnes in 2020."
  3. Note any anomalies or turning points: "There was a sharp dip in 2009, likely corresponding to the global financial crisis reducing industrial activity."
  4. Quantify the change if possible: "This represents an increase of approximately 81%."

Why does this matter? Because "the graph goes up" is worth maybe one mark. "CO2 emissions increased by 260 million tonnes (an 81% rise) between 1990 and 2020, with a temporary decline in 2009" is worth three or four marks from the same graph.

Calculations You Should Expect

Paper 2 occasionally asks you to perform simple calculations using data from the source. Common types include:

  • Percentage change: ((new value - old value) / old value) x 100
  • Percentage of a total: (part / whole) x 100
  • Rate of change per year: total change / number of years
  • Reading values from graphs at specific points

Always show your working. Even if your final answer is wrong, the examiner can award method marks if your process is visible.

Extended Response Questions: Structure That Earns Marks

The highest-tariff parts on Paper 2 are extended responses, typically worth 6-8 marks. These are where grades are won and lost. The mark scheme for these questions usually operates on a "levels" basis rather than a point-by-point basis.

Tip: Extended responses are not essays. Do not write an introduction or set the scene. Every sentence should either make a point, provide evidence, or explain a mechanism. The examiner is looking for density of relevant content, not elegant prose.

  1. Ignoring the source material. Writing a general answer about the topic without referring to the specific case study or data. The examiner will note this as "no reference to source" and cap your mark at Level 1.
  2. Describing data without explaining it. Stating that "the graph shows an increase" without saying why that increase occurred or what it means for the environment. Description alone is a Level 1 skill. Explanation is what lifts you to Level 2 and beyond.
  3. Not quoting figures. If the table says 450 hectares, write "450 hectares" in your answer. Vague language like "a large area" throws away easy marks.
  4. Misreading graphs. Check the axes carefully. Is the y-axis measuring thousands or millions? Is the x-axis in years or decades? A misread axis can make your entire answer incorrect.
  5. Running out of time on the last question. The final question on Paper 2 often carries the most marks. If you have spent too long on earlier sections, you sacrifice the most valuable part of the paper. Stick to your time plan.
  6. Writing everything you know about a topic. If the question is about water pollution in the context of the case study, do not write about air pollution, acid rain, and ozone depletion. Irrelevant material does not score, and it consumes time you need elsewhere.
  7. Forgetting the command word. "Suggest" means propose something reasonable based on the evidence, even if it is not explicitly stated. "Explain" means give a reason. "Evaluate" means weigh up and reach a judgement. Treating all command words the same way is one of the fastest paths to a disappointing result.
