Designing (Graphic products option)

Overzicht

Almost no graphic product today is designed entirely by hand. Computer aided design (CAD) lets a designer draw, edit, test and present ideas on screen with a speed and precision that pencil and paper cannot match. This topic weighs up what CAD gives a designer and what it costs, and then looks at the newest tool on the desk: artificial intelligence, which promises to speed up design but brings real risks a careful designer must understand.

For the Graphic products option you need balanced judgement, not enthusiasm or fear. Knowing why CAD makes it easy to test ten layouts in the time one hand drawing would take, and why an AI-generated logo might copy someone else's work, is exactly the reasoning the examiner rewards. This note builds both sides of each argument.

Doelstellingen

  1. understand the advantages and disadvantages of using computer-aided design (CAD) to design products
  2. understand the benefits and risks of using artificial intelligence (AI) in product design.

Lesnotitie

Computer aided design is the use of computer software to create, modify and refine a design on screen. For a graphic designer this covers drawing logos and layouts in vector software, building accurate packaging nets to scale, setting type, and producing photorealistic previews of a product before a single sheet is printed. Instead of redrawing a poster by hand each time the client asks for a change, the designer edits the on-screen file in seconds. That single fact, the ease of editing, is the root of most of CAD's advantages.
