Online Software

Overzicht

Not long ago, every piece of software had to be installed from a disc or download before you could use it. Today, many of the tools people rely on every day run entirely in a web browser, with files stored on remote servers rather than a local hard drive. This shift to cloud-based services has changed the way individuals and organisations work, collaborate, and store their data.

In this lesson you will compare hosted applications with locally installed software, weigh up online data storage against keeping files on your own device, and explore the wider impact of the cloud on everyday computing. These distinctions appear regularly on the Edexcel ICT exam, so understanding the trade-offs is essential.

Doelstellingen

  1. Understand the impact of cloud-based services: hosted applications, storage
  2. Understand the features and characteristics of hosted applications software and locally installed software
  3. Understand the features and characteristics of online data storage and local storage

Lesnotitie

Open a web browser, sign in, and start typing. That is all it takes to use a hosted word processor, build a presentation, or edit a spreadsheet today. No download, no installation disc, no waiting for updates to finish. The software lives on a server somewhere in the cloud, and your device simply displays it. But that convenience comes with trade-offs: you need an internet connection, and performance depends on bandwidth and latency rather than the speed of your own processor.
