Comprehension And Information Retrieval

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

The first questions in Section A are the only ones on the whole paper that ask nothing clever of you. They ask what the text says. Eleven of the forty five reading marks sit there, waiting for a candidate who reads the question boundary properly, chooses the right details and puts them in their own words. Most of the marks lost here are lost to haste, not to difficulty.

This note teaches the four things a retrieval question can ask you to do, how to read the scope of a question before you read the text, when a short quotation is right and when it is a wasted line, and how to make an inference that an examiner can see is anchored in the words on the page rather than in your imagination.

Ebumnobi

  1. Read and understand a variety of non-fiction texts, selecting and interpreting information, ideas and perspectives
  2. Read substantial pieces of writing, including whole and extended texts that make significant demands in terms of content, structure and the quality of language

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Section A of Component 1 is worth 45 marks and you are advised to give it an hour and a half of a two hour fifteen minute paper, reading time included. Those 45 marks are not evenly demanding. The specification's own breakdown splits them into 11 marks for AO1, 12 marks for AO2 and 22 marks for AO3. The AO1 marks come first, they come in the shortest questions on the paper, and they reward one thing only: accurate reading.
