Paper 1: Poetry And Prose

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Paper 1 sets your knowledge of poetry and prose set texts against the clock. You read texts closely across the year, then prove that reading in timed essays that build a clear argument and support it with detailed reference to the words on the page. This note is about the paper itself: how it is built, what the two question types ask of you, and how to plan and write an essay that argues rather than retells.

Because the set texts change from year to year, every model here uses out-of-copyright writing (Hardy, Rossetti, Owen, Dickens, Shakespeare). Focus on the method of approach, not the particular poem or novel: the same plan, the same way of turning a question into a thesis, and the same time management work whatever your texts are.

Ebumnobi

  1. Study set texts in poetry and prose and respond in essay form, supported by detailed reference to the texts.

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Paper 1 asks you to write essays on set texts in two genres, poetry and prose. You answer a fixed number of questions in the time allowed, and each essay is marked out of 25 against the same assessment objectives: your understanding of the text, your analysis of how the writer uses language, structure and form, and a personal, well-supported response. The exact rubric (how many questions, on which genres) is printed at the top of your paper, so the first thing you do in the exam is read it and obey it.
