Comprehension And Text Interpretation

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Every text in your examination is one you have never seen. There are no set texts to revise, no passages to learn in advance, and no way to arrive with the answers already half written. What you can arrive with is a method: a reliable way of turning a page of unfamiliar prose into evidence, and evidence into a claim an examiner can credit. That method is what Section A is really testing.

This note builds the first and largest of those skills. You will learn to separate what a text states from what it implies, to answer a short-tariff question in the number of points it asks for and no more, to summarise without flattening, and to make an inference that is anchored to the page rather than invented off it.

Ebumnobi

  1. Read and understand a variety of texts, selecting and interpreting information, ideas and perspectives
  2. Read substantial pieces of writing including whole and extended texts that make significant demands in terms of content, structure and the quality of the language

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

The single fact that shapes this qualification is that you will not have met the texts before. Two previously unseen extracts appear in front of you, and one hour later you must have answered every question on them. Nothing you memorised about a particular writer will help. What will help is having read widely enough that no kind of prose surprises you, and having practised a procedure so often that it runs while you are still nervous.
