Even with strong ideas, a wide vocabulary and varied sentences, frequent slips in grammar, spelling and punctuation slow the reader down and pull the mark back. The good news is that most errors that cost ESL candidates marks are a small, predictable set, which means they can be learned and checked for.
This lesson names the errors examiners penalise most often, shows how to spot and correct them, and gives you a quick proofreading routine for the end of the exam. You will compare an error-filled paragraph with a corrected one and see how clean, controlled writing reaches the higher bands.
