Joining

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

Very few products are made from a single piece. Almost everything around you is an assembly: parts that have been joined together, sometimes so they can be taken apart again and sometimes so they never will be. Knowing which joining method to use, and whether it should be temporary or permanent, is one of the most practical decisions a designer makes.

This note sorts joining methods into temporary (can be undone without damage) and permanent (cannot be undone without destroying the joint) for each class of material: papers and boards, woods, metals and polymers. You will learn the common methods, when each is the right choice, and how the same job can often be done either way depending on whether the product will ever need servicing, flat-packing or recycling.

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Before choosing a method, decide whether the joint must come apart again. A temporary joint can be undone without damaging the parts: a screw can be unscrewed, a bolt unbolted, a clip unclipped. Temporary joints are chosen wherever a product needs maintenance, repair, replacement of a worn part, flat-packing for transport, or separation for recycling. A permanent joint cannot be undone without destroying the joint or the parts: a weld, a riveted seam, a glued butt joint. Permanent joints are chosen for strength, for sealing, for security, and where the product is never meant to be dismantled. The same two parts could often be joined either way, so the deciding factor is the product's life, not the material.
