AO3 Analysis

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

AO3 is the heart of literary study and, in most Cambridge questions, the objective that separates a strong answer from an ordinary one. It asks you to analyse how writers use language, structure and form to create meaning and shape a reader's response. The key word is how: you are not being asked what happens in a text, but how the writer makes it happen, and to what effect.

This note shows you what analysis actually looks like on the page: the move from noticing a method to explaining its effect, how to write about language, structure and form precisely, and how to avoid the single most common trap, feature-spotting. Every model response here uses out-of-copyright writing so you can focus on the technique rather than any one set text.

Ebumnobi

  1. Analyse the ways in which writers use language, structure and form to create meanings and achieve effects.

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

Every literary text is a series of choices. A poet chooses one word rather than its synonym, ends a line early, repeats a sound. A novelist chooses who narrates, where a chapter begins, when to withhold information. AO3 asks you to read those choices as deliberate and to explain what they achieve. A writer's method is any such choice; the effect is what it does to meaning, mood or the reader.
