Report Writing

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

You have done the research. Somewhere in your notes is the answer to the question you set yourself four months ago. Now you have roughly 2,500 words in which to prove that you found it, and one criterion worth 24 of the individual project's 60 marks will be decided almost entirely by how those words are arranged. More candidates lose marks in the writing than in the research, and they lose them in a way that is completely predictable: they narrate what they did instead of evaluating what they found.

This lesson covers the six things the specification names under report writing: the introduction, choosing an appropriate style, voice and frame, appreciating the difference between narrative and evaluative report writing, using analysis and evaluation, the conclusion, and proofreading and editing with a proper appreciation of the word limit. You will rewrite a narrative paragraph into an evaluative one, judge three conclusions against the same evidence, and cut 320 words out of a report without losing a single finding.

Two candidates study the same thing: whether a school's new water fountains reduced the number of single-use bottles brought onto site. Both count bottles for four weeks. Both find a fall of roughly a third. One writes: First I asked permission. Then I counted the bottles in the bins each Friday. I counted 210 in week one and 139 in week four. Then I made a graph. The other writes: Bottle counts fell from 210 to 139 over four weeks, a drop of 34 per cent. Two things could explain it: the fountains, or the weather, which turned cooler in week three. The fall is concentrated in the two year groups whose form rooms are nearest a fountain, which the weather would not predict, so the fountains are the better explanation, though four weeks is too short to rule out novelty.
