A finish is the last thing you do to a product and the first thing the user sees and touches. Finishing is far more than decoration: it protects the material from moisture, corrosion and wear, it improves how the surface feels and looks, and it can add colour and meaning. This note runs through the finishes used on each class of material: papers and boards, woods, metals and polymers. You will see why some materials need a finish to survive at all, why others need almost none, and how surface preparation is the step that decides whether any finish succeeds or fails.
