Commercial Manufacturing Methods

Gbogbo ọrọ náà

When a designer moves from a single bench-made prototype to a product that must be made in thousands, the way it is shaped changes completely. A craftsperson can saw, file and glue one chair by hand, but a furniture company making twenty thousand identical chairs reaches instead for injection moulding, press forming, casting and robot-fed assembly lines. These commercial methods take the same plastics, metals and woods you meet on the workshop bench and turn them into finished parts quickly, repeatably and at low unit cost.

This note explains the main families of commercial manufacturing the 0445 Materials option asks you to know: forming processes such as injection moulding, steam bending and press forming; casting processes such as resin, sand and die casting; the jigs and fixtures that keep parts accurate; automation and robotics; and the heat treatments that change how metals behave. Each is set against a concrete product so you can see why a manufacturer would choose it over the alternatives.

Ebumnobi

  1. show knowledge of how products can be commercially manufactured from the materials named in 2.1, using: - forming processes (for example, injection moulding, steam bending, press forming) - casting processes (for example, resin casting, sand casting, die casting) - assembly aids (for example, jigs, fixtures) - automation (for example, robotics) - heat treatments.

Akọmọ Ojú-ẹkọ

On the workshop bench you remove material to reach a shape: you saw a plank to length, file a metal edge square, drill a hole. That is fine for one object, but it is slow and every piece comes out slightly different. Commercial manufacture works the other way round. Instead of cutting a shape out of stock, most commercial processes force a material to take the shape of a mould or tool. The expensive part is making that mould or tool once; after that, each copy is fast and almost identical. This is why commercial methods only make sense above a certain quantity: the tooling cost has to be spread across enough products for the saving on each one to pay it back.

  1. Which process injects molten thermoplastic under pressure into a steel mould to make complex parts in high volume? A. Sand casting B. Steam bending C. Injection moulding D. Annealing Answer: C
  2. Why is solid timber softened with steam before being bent around a former? A. To melt the wood so it can be poured B. To soften the fibres so the grain can follow the curve without snapping C. To harden the surface against wear D. To remove all moisture from the timber Answer: B
  3. What is the main difference between a jig and a fixture? A. A jig is for metal and a fixture is for wood B. A jig guides the tool as well as holding the work, while a fixture only holds and locates the work C. A fixture is always automated and a jig is always manual D. There is no difference; the terms are interchangeable Answer: B
  4. A hardened steel tool is brittle and may shatter. Which heat treatment is used to restore toughness? A. Quenching B. Annealing C. Tempering D. Sand casting Answer: C
  5. Which casting process forces molten metal under high pressure into a reusable steel die and suits high-volume metal parts such as toy cars? A. Resin casting B. Sand casting C. Die casting D. Press forming Answer: C
